Victorian London Style Images at Arcangel
Victorian London has been the atmospheric backdrop for many great stories in
literature and on screen. It immediately conjures up images of docks,
pickpockets, cobblestones, gas lamps, murky alleys and opium dens.
It’s the world of Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis
Stevenson, and it’s a place where the supernatural merges with history; it’s easy
to imagine Sweeney Todd brushing past Jack the Ripper in a street wreathed in
opaque fog…
More recently, it’s been the setting for the BBC’s Ripper Street, starring Matthew
MacFadyen and Jerome Flynn. A more colourful and gothic depiction can be seen
in Sky Atlantic’s Penny Dreadful with Timothy Dalton and Eva Green.
From classic fiction to steampunk sci-fi, Victorian London will continue to be a
rich source of inspiration to authors and directors. And to photographers aswell–
