We’re almost into summer blockbuster season, and in the next few weeks we have two major sci-fi sequels arriving in cinemas: Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant and Marvel’s  Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Scott’s original Alien film popularised a whole new sci-fi aesthetic, with grimy industrial environments and blue-collar workers rather than sleek sterile, spaceships and cool, professional astronauts. HR Giger’s horrifying Xenomorph creature has been often imitated if rarely matched.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2, meanwhile, will have a very different feel as an action-adventure space opera laced with plenty of humour. Its visual identity owes more to the Star Wars films, with colourful aliens and the blending of technology with mysticism.
